Ms. Gervonder Brown, a Charleston native also known as Island Gal, spoke to the 3rd grade students about the history of the Gullah culture. Third graders have been studying the history of the Carolina Colony and how the Gullah language is a mixture of African languages, Spanish, and English.
Students learned about the Gullah dialect and learned a few words and phrases like "chillun", "ent wut", and "baigum". Ms. Brown also shared Gullah information about the the Gullah/Geechie people, retold Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and the Tar Baby with student participating, and shared how sweetgrass baskets are made. As a finale, Ms. Brown taught the students how to catch a blue crab!
